Selling a home isn’t an easy process, but there are many home improvement projects you can take on to improve your home value and attract more potential buyers.

By simply focusing on your exterior décor and design, you can transform the look of your home and make the home-selling process a little easier.

Here are 5 ideas you can use to upgrade your home exterior and improve your home value.

1.  Landscape and Garden

An attractive garden and landscaping was ranked the most popular feature desired by homeowners in the 2020 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends Survey of Landscape Architects.

If your yard doesn’t offer much more than grass to mow, consider adding some landscaping details to make it more inviting. You can do this by adding a flowerbed around the sides of your home or even around your trees. Add edging and curbing to define the garden beds, grass area, etc.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a designated garden area; create planter gardens that can be grown almost anywhere with enough sunshine. Line your driveway with attractive planters featuring flowers or other plants, or create a beautiful planter garden on your porch.

2.   Build a Deck or Patio

Upgrading with a deck or patio alone would considerably increase the value of your home. In fact, 98 percent of homeowners surveyed in the landscape survey indicated they desire a home with a patio, deck, or terrace of some sort.

There are many options when it comes to adding a deck or patio, from less expensive, economical options to high-end, luxury patios. You can even build a floating deck in the middle or back of your yard.

3.  Outdoor Fire Pit or Fireplace

Adding an outdoor fireplace or fire pit is another creative way to add value to your home. The best thing about a fire pit is that it can be added with any sized budget.

From free-standing, store-bought fire pits to built-in 8’ tall fireplaces, everyone likes spending a cool summer evening with friends around the fire.

4.  Build a Fence

Enclosing your yard and patio area will look better as the space is better defined. It will also function as a security measure, drastically improving the value of your home.

You can purchase pre-constructed panels and assemble them in a day, or hire a company to create a custom fence. You have a lot of options for your fencing, from privacy fencing to block out any views, to open chain-link or lattice fencing.

5.  Add a Privacy Wall

Another attractive feature that is lesser-known is a privacy wall. If your outdoor space is visible to your neighbors or the road, but fencing is not an option or not sufficient for privacy, consider building an attractive privacy wall.

It’s easy to build one that is coherent with the design of your outdoor space, but will also add functionality to your yard. Even if you have a fence, making this taller than the fence and at the edge of your deck or patio adds a nice architectural component as well as privacy for your outdoor recreation.

6. Outdoor Lighting

A great way to add value to your home and make your backyard more inviting is to add an appropriate amount of outdoor lighting. Lights help to set the mood and make it easier to relax at night and at dusk.

Try starting with some string lights hung from a few poles or across a pergola. Use up lights to illuminate trees and bushes across your backyard. In-ground lights can help to light pathways and make it easier to to navigate in the dark.

The great thing is that it is now easier than ever to install quality solar lights in your backyard. Solar powered lights install quickly without needing an electrician, and are quite powerful.

7. Install a Sun or Rain Covering

Extend the ability to be outside for more of the year by creating extra shelter in your backyard. This can be an awning, pergola, or retractable shade cover that will protect you from the sun and rain.

If you don’t want to build a permanent structure, consider a large umbrella or sun shade tarp. They are easy to install, relatively cheap, and provide great cover.

By being able to use your outside space more, you’ll increase the value of your overall home. You will also be able to enjoy your time more by living in a beautiful and useful space.

Improving the value of your home doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. As long as you have a vision and some basic DIY skills, your home can be upgraded in no time!
